muslims a bit shaken by this incident. leaders of faith groups got together in palo alto to urge peace and tolerance. one even had a suggestion that might have been successful had it been brought up a couple weeks ago that the world ignore the karan burning. too late for that. the scheduled event brought back the topic of islamic phobia and that puts muslims on edge before hillary clinton and david petraeus strongly and publicly denounced the book burning. >> two days ago before all these statements surfaced, we were all very scared, very nervous. it was very uncertain. >> those guys are digging in their heels. the reverend jones has no intention of backing down. local organizations say they have no intention backing down either and vowing to increase their show of solidarity. the reverend jones says besides death threats, he also got a lot of encouragement.

>> now 5:02. arson investigators called to the scene of an early morning fire at an apartment complex at 60th street and mlk in oakland. the fire was knocked down quickly. the fire is very suspicion because the same apartment building burned yesterday afternoon. nobody was injured in either fire. five people walked away with only minor injuries after the brakes on a dump truck apparently failed just before plowing into 13 other vehicles in oakland. the driver told investigators he couldn't stop his truck while exiting from eastbound 580 on the grand avenue off-ramp at mcarthur boulevard. the truck crushed a car and shoved it into other vehicles. the driver expressed his regrets after what happened. >> i could get ahold of the people that got hurt and at least say i can say sorry, something. anything, you know. i didn't do it on purpose, you know. but that ruined their day big-time, you know. >> i think that everybody's

really lucky. i think we're fortunate there was nobody in the backseat of the honda or in some of the other cars. i think we were very lucky. >> the truck driver didn't want to give his last name. he's been on the job ten years. authorities haven't revealed his driving record yet. >> highway deaths have fallen to their lowest levels across america in six decades. more than 33,000 people died on america's roads last year. the transportation department points out that represents a little more than 9.5% reduction from 2008. the rate of deaths per 100 million miles driven also fell last year. safety experts credit more people wearing their seat belts, cars with better safety features and keeping drunk drivers off the road with saving those lives. >> 5:05. the california supreme court is refusing to order governor schwarzenegger or attorney general jerry brown to defend proposition 8. prop 8 supporters are appealing the ruling striking down the

measure. both schwarzenegger and brown have refused to back the appeal. the high court did not give a reason for turning down the supporters' request. plans to build an elevated tram to connect bart to the airport is a step closer to construction. the metropolitan transportation commission will allocate $20 million to help build the controversial connector. state and federal agencies are expected to approve the additional $500 million for the project. critics say the tram system is too costly. they're pushing a modified version of the bus system currently in place. >> san francisco international airport has cut a deal with bart to roll back a fare hike for employees. they protested bart's decision to add a c to passengers using the airport station in millbrae. it helped workers by operating a free shuttle bus from the station. the san francisco examiner reports in exchange for dropping the fee for employees, bart will be able to put up advertising at the airport station and pay monthly installments on a $2.5

international boulevard. -- 44th and international boulevard rather. another group of men drove up. there was some kind of dispute. one of the men who had been eating took out his gun and fired it. there was then a scuffle. someone grabbed the gun from him and shot him dead. both groups then fled the scene a vallejo man free on bail. a judge reduced bail for risen house from $2 million to $25,000 yesterday. police arrested him last week after the bodies of his wife and another woman were found at his home. police charged rittenhouse with possession of explosives and bomb-making chemicals found at the house. prosecutors are trying to determine his involvement, if any, in the debts of the two women. police believe they and another man were killed in a murder spree committed by 38-year-old valdemoro. he was shot and killed by highway patrol after a high-speed chase. the search for a fifth victim has turned up nothing so far at

apartment buildings. the city of fairfax is considering a measure that would require half the units to be non-smoking in buildings with six or more apartments. new apartment buildings would have to be 75% nonsmoking. larksper and two other cities are considering similar measures. the city of novato passed new restrictions on smoking in apartments two years ago. >> a pot growing operation discovered in the east bay hills. police seize the 2,000 mature marijuana plants at the regional wilderness park in san ramon yesterday. the marijuana was being grown in a remote area near the canyon. police spotted another suspect in the area but he got away before officers could catch up with him. >> an aide for boxer faces marijuana charges in washington. stanley is a scenier economic advisor to the senator. he removed pot from his pocket

running in the low to mid-50s. even salinas warmer at 58. things are going to change today as the air mass starts to modify a little bit. the breezes, they'll relax in the afternoon. it will be brighter. still cooler than average. tonight applied and cool once again but dry. don't need to worry about drizzle anymore. warmer tomorrow and looks like we'll have steady temperatures through most of the weekend as the weather's going to become a little uneventful, kind of quiet which is nice. none of these big swings we've been dealing with. mid to upper 70s. but only 72 dublin today. on the east bay shore, mid to upper 60s in most neighborhoods. hold out in fremont at about 70 degrees. in the south bay, partly cloudy, low to mid-70s today with saratoga, campbell and san jose at about 72. on the peninsula a partly cloudy sky. start 66 millbrae and as you head to the south bay, 71 los altos. we'll see some sunshine on the

coast today, maybe 60 in the sunset, sausalito mid-60s. san rafael 68 with low to mid-70s through the north bay valleys and even with sunshine only 50s at your beaches. mainly cloudy around the monterey. caramel 59. upper 60s to low 70s for hollister, gilroy and morgan hill. clouds around the coast and into the bay tonight. should be clear the north bay valleys mid to upper 40s once again. the clouds kind of disappear. still around from time to time today but not nearly as gray as it was yesterday. overnight we'll have the clouds move back in around the bay and the coast and tomorrow afternoon you can see the high pressure start to move in. keeps the clouds away from the coast and we'll have sunshine and seasonal temperatures starting tomorrow all the way through next week. in fact, we'll have low 60s at the coast starting tomorrow. mid-70s the bay and inland. mainly sunshine in the afternoon. have a great day. >> in oakland all lanes of
